About Us
The Bible describes a church as a community of people who follow Jesus Christ. Our aim at St Mary’s is to be actively ‘Loving Jesus; Serving Walney’. We want to learn from God’s word, grow in faith in him, and serve others by sharing the good news of Jesus in our words and in practical action.
The church building itself stands prominently on the hill at the end of the bridge from Barrow. The first church building on Walney Island was erected on this site in the sixteenth century. It has been rebuilt three times over the years, and the current building was completed in 1930.
St Mary’s is part of the Church of England and is one of over 250 parishes in the Diocese of Carlisle. This covers the county of Cumbria and is led by the Diocesan Bishop. St Mary’s is part of the Barrow Mission Community, and shares a vicar with St John’s Barrow Island.
